Rakhshabandhan legend behind festival

India is aptly known as the land of festivals and every celebration in India has a legend attached to it. Raksha Bandhan history is as enticing as the celebration itself. Rakhi festival is celebrated in the month of August across India where sisters tie the scared thread on their brothers` wrists. There is many a Raksha Bandhan legend associated with this Indian festival.

According to one popular Raksha Bandhan legend, in the vedic period, on a full moon day, the deities and the demons were at war. The demons had a stronger stance and the King of Deities- Lord Indra was worried about the result of the battle. In a bid to protect her husband and make him victorious, his wife Indrani prepared a Talisman with her religious power and tied it around his right wrist. On that particular day the deities won against the demons and Indra returned home unhurt. The Talisman has evolved and is now known as the Rakhi which is a holy thread tied with prayers for a brother`s long life.

King Bali and Goddess Laxmi:

According to another Rakhi legend, Raja Bali was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Such devotion made Lord Indra insecure. Lord Indra worshipped Vishnu asking him to help save his throne. Lord Vishnu accepted Indra's prayer. Having overthrown Bali, Lord Vishnu gave him the boon of immortality and promised to take care of his kingdom. In order to keep his promise, Lord Vishnu left his residence, 'Vaikunthdham', and went to safeguard Bali's kingdom. But wanting to get her husband back, Goddess Lakshmi went in the disguise of a poor Brahmin lady to Bali`s Kingdom. She tied a Rakhi on his wrist and asked him to send the Lord back to Vaikunthdham. Bali obliged and requested Lord Vishnu and Laxmi to return.

King Porus and Alexander's Wife:

Ancient Indian history sheds light on the fact that when Alexander the great came to India, he was resisted by none other than King Porus. Alexander`s wife felt insecure and fearing harm to her husband, she sent King Porus a rakhi. Legend has it that, that was the reason why Porus never harmed Alexander.

There are many more Rakhi festival legends which are popular during the onset of the festive occasion. Many traditions observed during Rakhi festival in India have originated from the popular Raksha Bandhan history and the legends associated with them.
