Raksha Bandhan is an Indian festival that is celebrated in many parts of the world also. Given the large number of immigrant population in the UK comprises of people of Indian origin, Raksha Bandhan is immensely popular there as well. As a majority of NRIs in UK have maintained their cultural and emotional roots, the festival of Raksha Bandhan is a very nostalgic occasion for them as it brings back the good old memories of their motherland. Thus, they continue to celebrate Raksha Bandhan with the same spirit as it is celebrated here in India. The notion and significance of the festival is very much alive in the UK, since first generation Indian migrants have passed on the cultural significance to second and third generation British Indians and they too celebrate the festival with a lot of reminiscence and sentiments.
A few weeks before this festival is due, sisters from India send Rakhi to their brothers living there. Since this festival embraces other members of the extended family, and other individuals with brotherly feelings as well, even cousins and other well meaning individuals residing in India send rakhi to UK to their cousins and acquaintances living there. Along with the rakhi, folks usually send some rice grains, betel nuts, and some nuts and dry fruits.
Since the distances involved are large, rakhi packets are sent much in advance so that the heavy postal rush is avoided. As Raksha Bandhan involves so much sentiment and emotion, receiving rakhis from back home has all the elements of nostalgia attached to it. People usually follow up with phone calls and rakhi return gifts as a token of appreciation and gratitude.
